Course Description

This non-accredited course is designed to raise awareness and improve practical skills related to hazardous manual tasks (previously referred to as manual handling) safety. Participants will gain essential knowledge on how unsafe practices can affect the body and will learn to identify and assess risks associated with hazardous manual tasks. The course covers the key sections of the Model Code of Practice and Regulations for Hazardous Manual Tasks. Participants will understand how high-risk hazardous manual tasks can affect musculoskeletal health and learn the legislation surrounding these tasks to mitigate risks. By the end of the course, students will have the necessary skills to assess and control risks related to hazardous manual tasks in various work environments, ensuring safer practices across all tasks.

  • Procedures for reporting hazards, incidents, and injuries.
  • Awareness of emergency procedures, including first aid and fire safety.
  • Identification of high-risk hazardous manual tasks.
  • Understanding the legislation and regulations surrounding hazardous manual tasks, with a focus on musculoskeletal injury prevention.
  • How to assess and manage risks associated with hazardous manual tasks, with practical demonstrations of risk assessment in real-world scenarios.
  • Strategies for controlling risks related to hazardous manual tasks, including proper lifting techniques and equipment usage.
  •
  • There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, applicants should have a basic understanding of English, both spoken and written, to ensure they can follow instructions and engage with course materials effectively.

Training and assessment are conducted on-site and are structured on a flexible basis to meet the needs of the organisation and students. This includes both classroom theory and practical on-job training, ensuring participants can apply their knowledge in the workplace immediately. The assessment consists of classroom-based exercises, group discussions, and practical demonstrations of hazardous manual task skills, assessing participants’ understanding of risk assessment and control measures.

Successful assessment outcomes will result in a Statement of Attendance, which serves as evidence of training. While this course does not lead to a unit of competency, the knowledge gained can support further development in workplace safety, health, and the management of hazardous manual tasks.

Students will be provided with all written and physical materials required to complete the assessment. Students must wear long trousers, a long sleave top and steel-capped boots.

This course is eligible for funding under the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) scheme, which supports individuals and organisations looking to enhance their skills. Eligibility is assessed on an individual basis, and each participant must meet the requirements outlined in CITB’s Eligibility Policy, available on their website.

Applicants must provide evidence of their eligibility before enrolling. For group bookings, funding may apply to each eligible participant, potentially reducing the overall cost. Please note that eligibility criteria may change at CITB’s discretion. For more details, please refer to the CITB policy directly.
